What is ILLiad?

Interlibrary loan (ILL) is a service which helps patrons obtain materials that are not available at the FIT Library. All patrons must have a valid FIT ID card and a current FIT e-mail account.

What can I request from ILL? What can I not request from ILL?

You may request materials not owned by the Library. You may also request articles from journals we do not own or are unavailable via the databases. You may not request materials owned by the FIT Library, even if they are checked out or for reference only or on reserve. We will also not order textbooks.

Is ILL free to use?

Yes! We will try to locate materials from lending libraries who do not charge for their materials. It may be possible the only library that owns the particular material may charge for which you will receive an email with the price and an option to pay for the loan or not.

How do I sign up for ILL?

Go to the log in page and click on First Time User. You will need to create a username and password. You must use your FIT email address when registering. All correspondences will be sent to your FIT email.

How do I use ILL?

On the main page under “New Request”, click on the type of material you would like to borrow. Fill out the mandatory fields. It is extremely helpful to include the ISBN number for faster processing.

Additionally you may browse the SUNY Connect Union Catalog for materials owned by all of the SUNY campuses. When you’ve found the item you wish to borrow, click to see its record and click on “Request Item”. Follow the instructions and the ILL form will be filled out for you. Don’t forget to click on Submit. If you don’t, we will not receive your request. Using SUNY Connect will help speed up your request.

You may also wish to browse WorldCat, a global catalog of library collections. WorldCat.org lets you search the collections of libraries in your community and thousands more around the world.

What information do I need to order a item?

A complete bibliographic citation would be helpful. But generally you should provide the author and title and year (if a specific edition is necessary)

How long does it take to receive items from lending libraries?

Materials are normally received and processed within one business week. However, depending on the speed and location of the lending library it may take longer than a week. The more esoteric the material the longer it may take to receive. Plan ahead and give yourself enough time to receive the materials.

How long can I keep the items for?

Generally for a month, however the specific due date is determined by the lending library. You may have a shorter loan period for audio visual materials.

How many ILL items can I request?

Undergraduate students may request up to 10 books and 5 A/V materials at once. Graduate students, Staff, and Faculty may request up to 25 books and 5 A/V materials at once. There is no limit on the amount of articles requested. There is no cap on the number of items requested per semester.

My ILL loans have arrived, where do I pick them up?

Stop by the Access Services/Circulation Desk on the 5th floor of the Goodman Center [E-Building]. You will need to sign and date the slips as confirmation that you have received the materials.

How do I renew material?

The window of opportunity to renew is 5 days before an item is due. The system will not allow you to renew before 5 days or after the item has come due. You may request one renewal from the lending library. To do so log into your ILL account. On the left hand side under View, click on “Checked Out Items”. Click on the individual request. You should see “Renew Request” in red letters. Click on that and you should see a new due date. Keep in mind, the actual due date is determined by the lending library.
